THE REALITY OF JESUS' LOVE AND THE POWER OF HIS FREEDOM.
November 2005

We continue to explore the meaning of Jesus' Love.
John 8:36 "If the Son of man sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Today, in the United Kingdom, it is quite safe to talk about religion. If you want to go to church or Sunday school you can, and if you don't you're not forced to go. Some people at school or work might poke fun at you for being a Christian, but that is all.

However, things are changing in Britain and in Europe. Terrorism is spreading fear and horror in the name of religion. The debate about the religious bill in the Parliament reminds us that soon or later, religious freedom will become the thing of the past. For example; 'If I say that Jesus is the only way to heaven;' does it mean that there is no any other way to heaven through other religions? The answer is either Yes or No.

We are aware that those who are engaged in the act of terrorism have raised many questions about faith and religion. The fact about terrorism is that it is a deliberate use of violence against civilians for political or religious ends. Even though most people can recognize terrorism when they see it, great modern thinkers have had difficulty coming up with a precise definition. The general consensus is that - 'terrorism is a premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against civilian targets by those who are religiously motivated groups or political agents, usually intended to influence an audience.' In other words; there are four key elements of terrorism:
  1. It is premeditated - planned in advance, rather than an impulsive act of madness.
  2. It is political - not criminal, like the violence that groups such as the Mafia use to get money, but designed to change the existing political order.
  3. It is aimed at civilians - not at military targets or soldiers.
  4. It is carried out by religiously motivated groups - not by the army of a country.
Over the centuries, many men and women and children in this country suffered for their beliefs. Christians were killed by other Christians who argued that their way was the right way.

Jesus told us that we must love one another. Isn't it good that today many Christian churches in Newham are working together to "Transform Newham"? And isn't it time that you wake up to your faith and stand up to transform your fellowship?

As I write these lines, there are 13 candidates from our fellowship preparing for Confirmation on Thursday 24th November 2005 at St Philip's Parish Church, Plaistow, Webb Gardens, Whitwell Road, E13 8SR at 7.30 pm.

What is Confirmation? Confirmation is obviously an event of great importance. Publicly, before family, friends and Christian congregation, you declare that you have committed your life to Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour and you want to follow him. Then the Bishop, by laying his hands on your head assures you of God's acceptance, welcome you in full membership of the church (for example St. Matthew's) and that you will be given grace to be faithful.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know I have sinned in my thoughts, words and actions. There are so many good things I have not done. There are so many sinful things I have done. I am so sorry for my sin and I turn from everything I know to be wrong. You gave your life upon the cross for me. Gratefully I give my life. Come in as my Saviour to cleanse me. Come in as my Friend to be with me. And I will serve you all the remaining years of my life in complete obedience. Amen.
