Is God Still Speaking Today?

Dear friends, welcome to our insights July 2008.

Hebrews 12:1-6 - Is God still speaking Today?

It's Jesus who provides the answer to this question. The Bible claims that God has nothing definitive to say to us greater than what he has said to humanity through Jesus Christ and (Hebrews 1:1-4) expresses it perfectly: in the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son...

That explains so much the details of what we need to know about Jesus Christ. He is the centre of God's voice and communication.

No one is going to improve on Jesus! Why?

There is no doubt about this centre of communication centred in Jesus. What God has to say to humanity reaches its goal in Christ and the message of his chosen apostles remains authentic. Authentic in the context of where, when, why, and who said it. We are not going to discover any new teachings that are better than that. In Jesus, God has said all that he wants to say to the human race, there is no extra revelation to follow, no additional prophetic word. Jesus himself warned against future claimants to some new messiah-ship even if they performed miracles by way of proof (Matthew 24:23-26; Luke 17:23); you are not to listen to them.

Our common sense tells us that not everything has stood still since the first century! Christ is alive and active: guiding his church in fulfilling his will and extending the kingdom of God. Hence the excitement and the growing sense of momentum imparted to Christians of every century.

The Power of the Holy Spirit makes it clear that there is something about the 'Word of God' in the Bible that means it is not to be added to. Timothy, the protégé of the apostle Paul, was to keep the pattern of sound teaching, and to guard the good deposit ( see details 2 Tim 1:13-14). It is wise to remember that the Bible is not an interesting collection of human insights that can therefore be added to. Instead we read of the trustworthy message... the sound doctrine..... The faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints (Titus 1:9; Jude 1:3).

Like Jesus, we need to look at what people can become and not simply what they have been. It is not always as easy as it sounds.

Forgiveness can be hard and takes courage, especially when others are condemning and we try to support the case of those who have fallen from grace.

It is wise to remember that the Bible is a library of books that is not to be tampered with.

Its end perfectly matches its beginning; it starts with the creation and closes with the new creation; it originates in a garden and terminates in a garden city; a tree features in the opening pages of the Bible and the tree of life is present in the final pages. In this way the two covers of the Bible can be bent back on themselves so that Genesis meets Revelation and Moses shakes hands with John. How could anyone think of adding extra material to such a perfect entity?

The Bible is the book of God and we can only pity those who have fatuously claimed 'We wrote the Bible so we can rewrite the Bible.' A divine judgement rests on those who would add anything to, or take anything away from, the last book of the Bible (Rev. 22:18-19). It's one that we should bear in mind with all scripture.

While there is nothing more to be revealed, there is plenty more to learn.

However, this is the excitement of the Bible study, theology and scholarship. We will never reach the stage when we sense that we have mastered God's book. We are able to explore its contents until the end of time!

I received a very interesting email from a friend and this is the testimony:

A Muslim man in Egypt killed his wife because she was reading the Bible and then buried her with their infant baby and 8-year old daughter. The girls were buried alive! He then reported to the police that an uncle killed the kids. 15 days later, another family member died. When they went to bury him, they found the 2 little girls under the sand - ALIVE!

The country is outraged over the incident, and the man will be executed. The older girl was asked how she had survived. 'A man wearing shiny white clothes, with bleeding wounds in his hands, came everyday to feed us. He woke up my mom so she could nurse my sister, she said.

She was interviewed on Egyptian national TV, by availed Muslim woman news anchor. She said on public TV, this was none other than Jesus, because nobody else does things like this

Muslims believes Isa (Jesus) would do this, but the wounds mean He really was crucified, and it's clear also that He is alive! But, it's clear that the child could not make up a story like this, and there is no way these children could have survived without a true miracle. Muslim leaders are going to have a hard time to figure out what to do with this, and the popularity of the passion movie doesn't help!

With Egypt at the centre of the media and education in the Middle East, you can be sure this story will spread. Christ is still turning the world upside down! Please let this story be shared. The Lord's says, I will bless the person who puts his trust in me, Jeremiah 17:7

Is this the act of God or man?

Prayer for the Month

God may your inward fire purify us,
Your inward light enlighten us,
May we be set on fire by the Holy Trinity.
May we follow in the steps of your Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ,
And may we come to you through your grace alone.
