BORN BEFORE HE WAS BORN

Dear friends, welcome to our insights for December 2008.

Christmas Day and Question Time.
What happened on Christmas Day?
Historical Facts!
The Biblical and historic record of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ can be found both in the Old and New Testaments.
Note in the Old Testament
1. To fulfil the prophecies of God's Word
2. To satisfy the law, paying for all who are guilty of sin (Isaiah 53; Hebrews 9:12,15). By his sacrifice, he purchased the right to give us salvation.
3. To show us an example of how to live, and to tell us important stories face-to-face.
Note in the New Testament
Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-20.
If Christ came from Heaven, would you like to throw some light at this Christmas time on Hell?
The answer to this question rests in the authority of the Scripture, because the Bible certainly teaches us of a very real and very terrible place of punishment for those who keep Christ out of their lives.

It's very sad to me that we so often hear people speak of Hell lightly.
To many it is something to be joked about, or a curse word used casually.
This is reality. The 11th September 2001 gave as a clue of hell on earth? The Bombing in London Underground on 11th July 2005, must remind us that there are agents of hell in their mission to destroy God's plan . Jesus came to show God's love for you and me. Think about God's love this Christmas (John 3.16). In our Church, this is beautifully written in Chinese and hung at the pulpit.
The fact of the reality of Hell is taught throughout the Bible in innumerable passages. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself probably had more to say about it than anyone else. He was a teacher with the most impressive credentials - a sinless life, a miraculous ministry, and an empty tomb that could not hold Him.
Christ is often spoken of as "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild," but that label hardly fits with the language we find in Mark chapter nine as He affirms the fact and reality of Hell. We read these strong statements:

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. - Mark 9:43-48. (Whatever you eat or drink this Christmas-remember these words).

In another passage Christ calls the Scribes and Pharisees a "generation of vipers," and warns them, "How will you escape the damnation of Hell?" (Matthew 23:33) Those are pretty strong words from the Lord Jesus. He laid it on the line. He told it like it is.

When someone questions the fact and reality of Hell, he's actually questioning the authority of the Bible, and the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The Christian faith is all tied up together, and when it is attacked at one point, it becomes vulnerable at all. It holds together beautifully.
If Christ is the Son of God, and if He came into time from eternity, and came into the world from Heaven and died and rose again from the dead, then anything He ever said on any subject is worth hearing and ought to be heeded. And is really to be received without question. So people who have problems with the fact and reality of Hell sometimes do not realize that their real problem is with the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and who He is and why He came to the world.

The Reality: How can you prove the virgin birth?

Indeed, Unlike any other baby, the one born that night in Bethlehem was unique in all of history. A human father and mother did not create him. He had a heavenly pre-existence (John 1:1-3, 14). He is God, the Son - Creator of the universe (Philippians 2:5-11). This is why Christmas is called the incarnation, a word which means "in the flesh." In the birth of Jesus, the eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing Creator came to earth in the flesh.
Why would God do such a thing? Why would he come as a baby, instead of appearing in power and majesty? Why make himself a true man and live among us, when he knew full well how terribly he would be treated?

It was Love!
It was necessary, if you are to be saved.
Come and hear more about Jesus Christ at our Christingle service at St Matthew's this Christmas
Are you a skeptic? [Remember you are not alone].
There are millions of questions about Jesus Christ and I cannot answer them here. However, consider these as you prepare for Christmas 2008
Do you know for sure that you are going to be with God in Heaven? If God were to ask you, "Why should I let you into My Heaven?" what would you say? Find out now! (This Christmas at St. Matthew's Church)
